Message from the Program Director

Dear Applicant,

Thank you for your interest in the Pediatric Residency Program at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center. Bronx- Lebanon is a major teaching affiliate of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and utilizes the sub-specialty resources of the College to complement its extensive general pediatric experience.

We have an excellent program that emphasizes primary care pediatrics and the comprehensive care of children in varying states of health and disease. We have a diverse group of primary care and sub-specialty faculty who are fully committed to your training. Our setting in a poor urban neighborhood affords ample experience with infectious diseases and the challenges of complex medical and social problems. Our exciting programs in practice-management, research, adolescent medicine, community pediatrics and resources to refine cultural sensitivity and communication skills add special richness to the learning experience.

All residents spend at least 20% of their time in continuity clinics throughout the three years of training. At the same time, the concentrated exposure to acutely ill patients that occurs on the inpatient service, PICU and NICU continue to serve an important educational purpose. These rotations provide an efficient way to learn essential skills related to acute and chronic illness and a meaningful exposure to patients with varying pediatric illnesses. Integration of care in all settings and the importance of longitudinal follow-up are also emphasized. It is expected that at least half of our graduates will choose careers in primary care pediatrics rather than in a pediatric sub-specialty field. If this career direction is consonant with your personal goals, you are encouraged to apply.

In considering applicants, we are concerned about personal qualities as well as academic credentials. We especially value strong motivation to learn, commitment to patients, flexibility, a sense of humor, enthusiasm for work and an interest in teaching others. Our residents must willingly and cheerfully help each other and contribute actively to ongoing educational activities. The residency years will demand your efforts, however, our resident- friendly milieu will enable you to grow into your full potential. This is a time of challenge as you learn about yourself and others in the pursuit of personal and professional growth.

If you are interested in applying to our program you must submit your application through ERAS, along with all supporting documentation. If you wish to contact us, please call (718) 960-1417 or email the program coordinator. We look forward to meeting you.

 Sincerely,
